Promotional images project

From San Jose Bike Party Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The promotional images project aims to gather more images (primarily photographs) for use in promoting SJ Bike Party, chiefly on the website. As an example, we could use stock-photo-esque shots to illustrate pages on the site, and dramatic crowd/character shots to illustrate posts about each ride. This could ultimately connect with the history project in an attempt to photo-document each ride.

[edit] Purposes for promotional images

We could use more images for any of these purposes:

  • illustrating website pages
  • sending to reporters in reply to media requests about Bike Party (see media project)
  • creating flyers and images for events and rides

[edit] Images needed

This list could be extremely long with specific details, but photography is an art, not a prescription science. Here are some ideas of shots we could use:

  • Well-lit crowd shots showing happy, energetic, well-behaved, diverse cyclists
  • Images of volunteers doing their jobs:
    • BIRDs directing traffic
    • BIRDs or organizers addressing a crowd
    • speakers at meetings
    • volunteers on the phone (presumably, doing fantastic organizing work)
  • Close-ups of riders of all types enjoying Bike Party events
  • Close-ups of members of the public reacting positively to our ride
    • Drivers smiling & waving
    • Bystanders waving, cheering, spectating on their lawns/etc
  • Dramatic artistic shots of bike lights, etc.
  • Technical shots for illustrative purposes:
    • Proper bike lighting
    • Cyclists occupying the right lane properly
    • Sound system set-ups
    • Creative bike decorations
    • Creative costuming ideas/methods

[edit] Rights issues

Somehow or another, we'll need to get the rights from photographers involved to use their shots for any variety of purposes in promoting Bike Party. This would ideally include the ability to edit, crop, create derivative works, publish by web or print, and distribute to press. Attribution is definitely possible - watermarks are a brilliant idea for well-cropped shots, though storing authorship data in the metadata can help us track any photos we otherwise forget about when it's time to make a website caption or give a media credit.

We could definitely use suggestions from experienced photographers for what sort of agreement/waiver/form we should use to make everyone happy and eliminate potential conflicts with content rights!

[edit] How to contribute

At the moment, anyone interested in contributing to this project may want to e-mail nick (at) sjbikeparty.org to start a conversation. The next step, beyond taking photos, would be to upload choice shots. There are two options:

  • upload photos to this wiki - create an account, log in, and hit Upload file on the left to get started
    • this might be a good idea only because of how simple it is to make wiki pages to categorize and link to these images.
  • upload photos to the website - likewise, create an account, and ask Nick (or webmaster (at) sjbikeparty.org) to give your user account upload permissions (you'll need to be an "author").
    • this is a good idea for images that ultimately need to end up on the website
