How to plan a route

These priorities have been developed by a few experienced route-planners to help guide the difficult process of figuring out how to get 1,500+ bike riders through the streets late at night.

Note: This process has changed a lot since we started seeing 1,500+ riders on a regular basis. See some notes below, it's interesting:

  • Safety
    • Right turns
    • Minimize conflicts with car & pedestrian traffic, etc.
  • Visibility overall plus 1-3 very high profile, high-interest parts of the ride
  • avoid residential areas after 11pm as much as possible
  • avoid retail areas with many convenience stores, driveways, etc.
  • Good rest stops
    • Big enough for 500+ riders -> 2,000 riders
    • Spaced every 2-3 miles and/or 30 minutes -> every 6-10 miles and/or 60 minutes
    • Rest facilities are a bonus -> any tips for water or restrooms are golden - dehydration is a real problem
  • Reasonable length (15-30mi, usually around 20-25mi)
  • Cover different parts of SJ (and surrounding areas, when possible)
  • Different starting points every month
    • to not wear out our welcome
    • to keep the ride interesting
